Description:

Lithographic prints of 59 drawings by Leonard Baskin, made expressly for the University of Chicago Press edition of The Illiad of Homer, translated by Richard Lattimore. Printed by Meriden Gravure Company on Curtis Tweedweave. B&W prints are 26 by 20 inches. Clean and unmarked. *** Lattimore¿s now-classic translation, was first published by the U of Chicago Press in 1951. A decade later, the Press invited the artist, sculptor and printmaker Leonard Baskin to produce drawings for a lavish, illustrated edition, which came out in 1962. ***That same year a deluxe portfolio edition of 150 copies was published by Delphic Arts in New York. *** This is a proof copy of the Delphic Arts prints, as this set was recently deaccessioned by the printer Meriden-Stinehour. In 1960, the University of Chicago Press asked wood engraver, sculptor, and artist Leonard Baskin to prepare drawings for an illustrated edition of Lattimore's translation of the Iliad. The handsome volume was much admired although some critics were shocked by the drawings. One claimed that Baskin had created "a gallery of heroes as far removed from Flaxman's as is the translator's work from that of Pope." Another commented they were so savage "that one expects to get blood on his hands when touching the drawings and turning the pages," according to the U of Chicago Library website.
