Description:

London. 1953. Collins. 1st British Edition. Very Good In Dustjacket. 21. 223 pages. hardcover. keywords:. inventory # 8851. FROM THE PUBLISHER - This is Uys Krige’s second book in English. His first, THE WAY OUT, was one of the earliest escape stories of the Second World War and was widely acclaimed. In THE DREAM Mr. Krige takes up an entirely new theme, a study of a little Afrikaans boy and the effect which the birth and death of a young brother has on his ordered, self-absorbed existence. In the course of under a hundred pages he contrives to present an experience complete in its effect on the young Jannie, while carefully portraying the whole world of his boyhood, from the zest of the rugger tackle to his calm and strange death-dream. There are other stories, too: TWO DAUMIERS touches ironically on a burning racial question: DEATH OF A ZULU, which appeared in an earlier form in Harper’s Magazine, gives another slant to the psychological effects of war. The book ends with a moving and brilliant one-act play. Uys Krige is a distinguished writer and poet, already famous in his native South Africa, and an acknowledged master of Afrikaans poetry and prose. THE DREAM AND THE DESERT, we are confident, will establish and confirm his reputation as an interesting and unusual writer. Uys KRIGE is a distinguished South African poet, playwright, essayist, writer of travel books, translator (he translates both ways between Afrikaans and five European languages), broadcaster and lecturer. As a public speaker he often appears on Liberal platforms. He has published fourteen books in his own language, Afrikaans, and has won half-a-dozen national prizes for his work both in Afrikaans and English. His life has been as varied as his publications. Born on the farm of his grandfather in the Swellendam district, Cape Province, in 1910, he was seven years old before he learnt to speak English. In 1929 he took his B.A. degree in Law at Stellenbosch University. He worked on the Rand Daily Mail, Johannesburg, for i8 months, then roamed Europe for five years living principally in France, Spain and Flanders, earning his living as professional Rugby player and coach, swimming teacher, dishwasher, private tutor, etc. He was South African war correspondent in Italian Somaliland, Abyssinia and Egypt. Captured at Sidi Rezegh in a tank battle in November 1941, he wrote a secret daily newspaper for a year in an English P.0.W. camp in Sulmona. He escaped from the camp in September 1943, getting through to the Canadian lines six weeks later. He is a member of a gifted and versatile family. His father is one of South Africa’s most famous Rugby players and athletes who toured Great Britain with the Springbok team in 1906; his mother, who published her first book at the age of 64, has written some remarkable short stories in the Afrikaans language; his brother is the well-known South African painter, François Krige; and his wife, Lydia Lindeque, the distinguished South African bilingual actress. .
