During his youth, Ye Shi-tao used to play in the Hulu (Gourd) alley. While he was receiving his education, he also read books he liked. During a day when he was seventeen, his dream to be an author was fulfilled -- his writing was accepted for publication. Even after the finance of his family slid downwards, Yeh Shyr Tau still worked as a teacher to feed his Dream-eating Beast and his family members; although this Dream-eating Beast had caused Yeh Shyr Tau to go through all kinds of hardships in life, in the mean time it also shone light in the life of Yeh Shyr Tau, making him an important author and critic in the history of literature of Taiwan. In Looking Back at Taiwan Literature, Yeh Shyr Tau wrote: It goes without saying that an author is like a beast feeding on dreams. How does he know that this Dream-eating beast also has the need of daily bread, and bread is nothing that can be earned by merely dreaming all day This Dream-eating beast is Yeh Shyr Tau the author, as well as the literature that he loves!

It was the book on the history of Taiwan literature by a true Taiwanese. Because of this contribution, he was considered the founder of the study of Taiwan literature. Other than literature critic reviews, he was also a write on novels and prose. His novel, Spring Dreams in HuLu (a kind of gourd) Alley was made into a movie.
