About this title

Synopsis:

Describes how women experience difficulties in their real-life marriages through false expectations stemming from romantic fiction, and suggests ways to overcome them through developing a Christian perspective on the relationship of the sexes

From Library Journal:

Hanes ( The Child Within , Tyndale House, 1983) asks women to reexamine their fantasy lives by listening to their hearts and turning to God for happiness, instead of the prepackaged escapism offered by the media. While not actually condemning television, romance novels, and the like, she points out that these media do not accurately portray real life. Using case histories, Hanes illustrates how some women lose touch with reality by misusing their imaginations. In addition to the dangers of romantic fantasy, she discusses how women can harm themselves by worrying needlessly over hypothetical situations, or by wallowing in self-pity. Hanes believes that women can find happiness and fulfillment through a combination of creative fantasies, prayers, and realistic goals. She does not urge women to suppress their sexuality; rather, she believes that sexuality--within the context of a loving and monogamous relationship--is one of the highest forms of communication with God. There is much helpful information in this book, even for non-Christian women. However, the numerous Bible references may not appeal to everyone. For larger collections.
