Synopsis: Book by Houze, Herbert G.
From Booklist: This volume is appropriately dedicated to all the young dreamers whose interest in firearms was sparked by a first shot fired from a Winchester .22 caliber single-shot rifle. Provided here is a nostalgic history that discloses the chain of events that resulted in this classic rifle, which proved to be especially popular among youths. The Winchester Company first became interested in producing a single-shot rifle when Sharps Rifle Company failed; and Winchester progressed soon thereafter when it had the opportunity to examine a single-shot rifle produced by the Browning Brothers. The development of the single-shot Winchester rifle of 1885 soon followed. The evolution of the rifle and its successors is extensively documented and fully illustrated with design drawings and detailed photos. In all, more than 2.25 million of the various single-shot .22 caliber rifles were sold. Though it is not as well known as many of the Winchester Company's more famed products, it fostered a loyalty that lasted a lifetime. Fred Egloff
