About this title

Synopsis:

After breaking his wrist in an attempt to copy his daredevil brother, seven-year-old Drew is suddenly able to draw cartoons like a professional artist

From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-6?Armstrong, creator of the daily comic strip JumpStart, relies on the comics-as-catharsis theme a bit too heavily here and his story bounces, rather than segues, from one chapter to the next. Twelve chapters; three (very) short comic books by the eight-year-old narrator; and a hodgepodge of black-and-white illustrations depict the adventures of Drew, his comic-book superhero, and his 12-year-old idolized brother. Drew tries to emulate Kyle's machismo by jumping off a 14-foot wall and breaks his wrist. However, he miraculously gains artistic powers as he heals, so he puts pencil to paper to create Mason Stone: Superagent, modeled after?you guessed it?his big bro. In addition to Kyle, readers meet Drew's parents, older sister, three best friends, a psycho bully, a foul-mouthed and mean-spirited science teacher, and a gurulike principal. And there are lessons galore: don't jump to conclusions; clarinets are not for sissies; guardian angels can be overprotective; use what you know when you write (or draw); respect doesn't come from hot-dogging; and PBS shows can be pretty cool. Also, Kyle gets his face ripped off performing a bike-jumping stunt. Whew! By the way, a Bub Daddy is a two-foot strip of bubble gum.?John Sigwald, Unger Memorial Library, Plainview, TX
