About this title

Describes artistic responses to the Dreyfus affair, looks at paintings, sculpture, and prints inspired by the case, and explains why the case aroused such a controversy

From Library Journal:

The Dreyfus Affair dominated French politics for nearly a decade at the turn of the century, producing divisions that spilled over into all walks of life. Artists and illustrators showed their preferences in their art; authors and poets joined the fray. The Jewish Museum in New York displayed a visual record of the affair in 1987-88. This book catalogs that exhibition but goes beyond it to provide useful essays on the affair itself, French anti-Semitism, the political role of artists, and what the visual evidence tells us about French society and culture. Of interest to a wide range of readers, whether or not they have seen the exhibition. Frank L. Wilson, Purdue Univ., W. Lafayette, Ind.
