About this title

Synopsis:

Hardcover with Dustjacket. 121 pages. First US publication for a younger British novelist: a plotless novel, arranged in dozens of short takes, that watches a mixed bunch of characters muddling through, English style, in a world defined by random violence and shifting sexual preferences.

From Publishers Weekly:

Published to praise in Britain and Australia, Hodgman makes her U.S. debut with this smart, often startling, energetic and choppily episodic novel that has more flash than substance. Centered on Moss and Hazel, a lesbian pair attached to an earnest, ideologically correct, feminist collective in contemporary south London, Ducks flits randomly between their current lives, 40-year-old Hazel's luridly tumultuous past in Australia and North America, and the present attempts of her estranged husband, known only as "le professeur de judo," to blank her from his mind. The supporting cast includes Moss's wandering, loony and destitute ex-boyfriend Harold, father of her bewildered tot, Elvis; middle-aged Walter and Daphne, owners of a dog named Angst and conventional parents of teenaged Rupert, who contemplates a career in international terrorism while his father becomes entangled with Hazel; and an assemblage of comic lesbianideologues. But however blackly or benignly comic, outrageous or weird Hodgman's characters, the work is insufficiently humorous overall to escape the limitations of their cartoonish lack of depth. And the author's showy, staccato intercutting of numerous fragmented episodes increases the narrative's opacity rather than offering insight into a grimy urban vision.

Wonder Book and Video has been in business since 1980 and online since 1997. We have over 1 Million books for sale on our website and another 1 Million books for sale in our 3 locations. We have a very active online inventory and as such, we can receive multiple orders for the same item. We fill those orders on a first come first serve basis, but will refund promptly any items that are out of stock. Since 1980 it has always been about the books. ALL kinds of books from 95 cent children's paperbacks to five figure rare and collectibles. A merging of the old and new is where we started, and it is where we are today. Our retail stores have always been places where a reader can rush in looking for a title needed for a term paper that is due the next day, or where bibliophiles can get lost "in the stacks" for as long as they wish. In 2002 USAToday recognized us as "1 of 10 Great Old Bookstores", and we have been featured in numerous other newspaper and TV stories including Washington Post and CSpan. Members ABAA, ILAB.
