Book Description Pineapple Press, Sarasota, FL, 1983. Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Gold boards with red metallic titling and wagon wheel illustration on front cover. 123 pages. Jacket illustration and design by Edwin L. Stephens. By the author of "A Day No Pigs Would Die" and "Soup." ~~ Book is in excellent condition, clean, tight, unread, with some very small, faint foxing spots on front endpapers which are barely visible. Dust jacket is clean and crisp, with two short closed tears at top of rear panel and some foxing on REVERSE side of jacket only. Now in clear archival cover. ~~ This prolific author of books for young adults wrote his first novel at the age of 44. "Dukes" is his second novel set in Florida. This is the story of Lucky, an orphan girl; Baptist, a deaf-mute Black fighter; and Nose, his boxing manager, who travel across Florida in their "Dukes" wagon, putting on prize fighting shows. The word "Dukes" is a double entendre, signifying not just the boxing shows, but also the inner nobility of this unfortunate trio, whose "personal worth and wealth somehow triumph over their homeless poverty. Once again, Peck creates characters who stand in swamp mud, in rags, yet look upward at stars and rainbows. " --dust jacket. This copy is inscribed by Peck on the front free endpaper: "To Frankie, RM Peck." Scarce. Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 001220
