Dumbo Diary Royal New Zealand Air Force No.6 (Flying Boat) Squadron 1943-1945
429 pp., illustrations. Dumbo Diary draws on the archival records of RNZAF No. 6 (Flying Boat) Squadron in private and public collections. These records, for the most part, tell in the worlds of the New Zealand airmen who were there, the experience of flying long missions over endless tracts of the south west Pacific patrolling for enemy submarines and downed airmen. They also tell of the experience of many hundreds of men who left the comfort of their homes in New Zealand to live and work in the heat of the Tropics, servicing aircraft and providing all that was necessary to operate an effective and efficient flying boat squadron. Many were men who in a traditional history would not get an mention in the histories of the Second World War, they were cooks and clerks, wireless mechanics and beaching crew. But for all the hardships, the endless noise of the engines, the burning heat of the airframes, malaria spreading mosquitoes, and the distance from loved ones, the men of 6 Squadron returned to New Zealand and civilian life with an enduring admiration for the 'Cats' and the work they did. 0.0.
