About this Item

Frontispiece of"The Empty Chair" by S. L. Fildes and illustrated with facsimiles of letters, chiefly by Dickens. 20 pp. 8vo. Blue paper wraps with a decorated printed paper label on front cover, the entire gathering tied with string, which ihad been knotted externally. Podeschi H391. The author, an American collector, visited Gad's Hill Place, formerly Dickens' home and later a girl's school, to inspect the residue of Dickens' home and library. The residue of the library consisted of a series of false book backs, ordered by Dickens himself with exact descriptions of the many witty and fake book titles from a Mr. Eeles, and fitted to hide a door, which had interrupted his line of bookcases, with a false bookcase housing the false book backs. The author gives a complete list of the humorous book titles that still remained, provided to him by the Head Mistress of the school at Gad's Hill. Bookseller's tag inside front cover: "Berkelouw Bookdealers Sydney". Mild wear at edges of covers. Slight soiling of covers Binding cord, separated at centerfold. Else, Very Good.
