Synopsis: The Dying Process - A Hospice Social Worker's Perspective On End Of Life Care, provides a detailed exploration of issues pertaining to patient and family grief reactions, the duration and preparation for death, closure support needs, understanding pain, pain management and avenues to create a positive death experience for both the patient and family.

Over a decade of work in the hospice field, author and social worker, Dana Plish offers professional insight regarding his experiences with patients and families who are in the dying process. He elaborates on the process of death which impacts family coping, patient and family closure, barriers to acceptance, and examines negative and positive death processes. He concludes with ways in which family can aid the patient during life to death transition and support ongoing bereavement and grief needs. Dana comments on patient grief related to the loss of pets and supporting patient closure with their pets when possible.

Dana has worked in the social services field for 30 years and he presents the subject matter in a simple, easy to read and understand format which serves as a practical guide for anyone who has a loved one in the dying process.

From the Author: I wrote this book based on both personal and professional hospice work experience. It is my purpose to aid patients and families faced with both chronic and sudden terminal illness, by providing helpful information beforehand to ease the pain of grief, comfort the conflicted, give rest to the weary and create an atmosphere of love and positive coping. Over the past 11 years I have worked as a social worker on the front lines of hospice patient care in the hospital, home and long term care settings and want to help patients and families recognize key issues related to end of life care that I see consistently in my work everyday.
Many times it is a great challenge to provide education about the aspects of dying because of the overwhelmed state of emotion patients and families are experiencing in the rush of medical care. Challenges arise when loss occurs sudden or without warning. It is in these moments we are left bewildered with feelings of guilt and regret that can attack our hearts and minds. It is my hope that my book will help patients and families be aware of the emotional and physical aspects of the dying process and offer information which promotes open discussion in preparation for a loved one's passing.

Many people who have read my book and who work in the hospice field have shared with me that it has been helpful to use as a resource and guide in their daily interactions with patients and families.

It is my desire to give back in honor of all of the patients and families that I have had the privilege to serve. It is my hope to help patients and families find comfort and peace as they enter into the dying process!
