VERY SCARCE FIRST EDITION. Henry Stanley is one of the greatest heroes in the history of African exploration, but very little is know of his exploits in Kansas City. Accounts of experiences with ‘Wild Bill’ Hickok, George Custer and numerous Indian peoples highlight the American travels in Volume I of this set. ‘The letters from the Indian country which are contained (therein) were not written with a view to permanent publication, but for the exacting and imperious necessities of American newspapers, principally for the Missouri Democrat of St. Louis, and a New York paper. The incidents to which the letters relate occured in 1867, during two Indian campaigns.’ Volume II is a narrative of Stanley’s near circular journey from Egypt to Constantinople, Teheran, through the Persian Gulf to the Sea of Oman, Kerachee, Bombay, and then through the Indian Ocean to the Congo. Stanley says in the text that ‘the success of my Indian letters induced Mr. Gordon Bennett of the New York Herald to apoint me his special correspondent on the Abyssinian Expedition in 1868. Having by good fortune succeeded in sending in news of the fall of Magdala many days in advqance of the Government and English correspondents, and I was sent on a roving mission to Egypt, Crete, and the Levant, and finally to Spain--whence in October, 1869, I was summoned to Paris to receive a commission for the finding of Livingstone in Central Africa. But previous to embarking on the last enterprise, which wa great for a young journalist, I was instructed to report on the inauguration of the Suez Canal, to write a kind of guide to the Nile, to visit Captain (now Sir Charles) Warren, and give an account of his explorations underneath Jerusalem, and finally I was to proceed through Persia to India, via the Caucasus, and send a series of letters upon all subjects that I might find worth describing on the way’ (intro).
