About this Item

HC. VG/Fair to Good. 10 1/2 x 14 1/2". THIS FABULOUS EDITION FAITHFULLY FOLLOWS THE uncensored original issue of 1923, which was confiscated and 24 of the plates were destroyed. Grosz found guilty defaming public morals and fined 6000 marks. 16 Watercolors and 84 Line Drawings revealing modern Germany between the Wars with all its lust, greed, dope, sexual perversions, murder and terror. Women are selling themselves and their daughters, crippled WWI veterans are peddling in the streets, The swastika apears on lapels, military is executing some poor victim. Grosz is the greatest social satirist of the 20th cty on par with Goya and Daumier earlier. Great monograph on George Grosz. Book in very good condition, exquisite plates, front free endpaper shows crease from accidentally being folded when closing book, Dustjacket has no tears, but scattered foxing, browning around edges and spine, several fingerprints in brown and ochre paint (artist must have been holding it while painting), some scraping. Pictorial DJ shows watercolor of sailor, dame and city life around them. Great artist book but also historic. 1965. Bookseller Inventory # 001421
