About this title

Poems consider the past, parenthood, mortality, success, misunderstanding, sleep, love, and travel.

John Ciardi merged erudition with passion and humor with intelligence. Few had his breadth: translator of Dante, critic (How Does a Poem Mean?), teacher, editor, poet. These previously unpublished final poems (six of them appeared last year in Poems of Love and Marriage and three others elsewhere) show the same inspired eclecticism that marked his earlier work. He writes poems of youth, travel, literature, age, and death: "I am measuring a place / For the living's living grace. / I am running from the breath / Of the vaporing coves of death." Taut and felicitous, Ciardi's lines show grace under pressure. One is teased into thinking that he is light-hearted because he is so unsolemn but his poems, as in Echoes, are a dialogue with the infinite: "The conversation is over. Given a choice between Dante and a stone over two graves, what shall I read? I have no mother and father. They have no God unless I remember one as part of a conversation I forget except that it pleased me to be touched in the telling." Ciardi is in awe of the infinite, yet his poems do not "think" too much. They begin small but end at the farthest limit of the imagination. When John Ciardi died, an era of our letters passed with him. -- From Independent Publisher
