Book Description Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, 1941. Cloth. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. While some - notably Charles Everitt - dismissed this sale as being of little importance, it remains one of the great book auctions of all time, attracting buyers, rare book dealers and collectors from all over the world to eight sale days. The funds received, while less than anticipated, were significant for the time. No doubt, the timing of the sale in the midst of WWII seriously affected the realized prices. It can also be said that Newton had amassed not only a large, but an outstanding collection ranging from William Blake to Robert Burns, Charles Dickens, Samuel Johnson, Thomas Hardy, Christopher Marlowe, Christopher Morley, Edgar Allen Poe, Robert Louis Stevenson, and various presentation copies from authors of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Approximately 2,000 volumes are listed, many with illustrations and Newton's personal comments, and all with bibliographical notes. The illustrations include a full-page colour plate from William Blake (opp. p. 42, Vol. 1). The three catalogue volumes, all in original, VG- dustjackets and with scattered marginalia in pencil as to prices, are not uncommon as a set. Our offering includes the 24-page volume, issued without dustwrapper, which features, among other materials, the introductory essay by Edward's son E. Swift Newton, essays from A. S. W. Rosenbach and Randolph Adams from the Clements Library at the University of Michigan, amongst others, and of one of Newton's bookplates set in blind on the front boards. A desirable reference guide and a part of the rare book history of the twentieth century. All volumes illustrated, including one in full colour by William Blake, opp. p. 42, Vol. 1. Shipping of this set may attract extra shipping charges, properly wrapped and packaged. Size: Octavo. Bookseller Inventory # 004341
