About this Item

369 pages. "This is the Second Symposium on the Plasma Sheath. It's effect upon re-entry communication and detection." Sponsered by the Electromagnetic Radiation Lab, Electronics Research Directorate, Air Force Cambridge Research Labs, and the Office of Aerospace Research. This valuable contribution to the literature treats of ionized flow fields about aerospace vehicles which can arise from any of several causes- shock heating of atmospheric gases during reentry, plume exhausts of both chemical rockets and electrical-propulsion engines, and nuclear and solar radiaition. The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with ionized gases is made manifest in aerospace research primarily through two effects-first, the radio signals emitted from a spacecraft can be severly attenuated, modified, or degraded; second, the radar cross section of the re-entry body can be changed sognificantly from its free-space value. The importance of thses phenomena as a limiting factor for both military and civilian space exploration is evidenced by the extensive government-sponsored research programs in re-entry physics.
