This is a re-publication of the author's University of Chicago doctoral thesis and includes a Cahuilla bibliography and introductory essays by Harry W. Lawton, Lowell John Bean and William Bright. The famous anthropologist A.L. Kroeber called Barrows' dissertation "one of the most human doctor's dissertations ever written" and said this work is "perhaps the best introduction to a study of the California Indians." Harry C. James, author of THE COAHUILLA INDIANS said that "Barrows' ETHNO-BOTANY remains one of the most significant books that have been written about the Indians of Southern California.".
