About this Item

Red cloth over boards with gilt titles to spine. Yellow dust jacket by Artzybasheff, illustrated in black and red with price intact. Boards are tight with a barely discernable right lean to the front board. A couple of smudges to front board where a little color has transferred just lightly to inside of dj and a 1/4 inch oval mark on back board, again with just a little lifting of color. Tiny (1/16 inch) fingerpull tear and very minor creasing to cloth at top of spine. Rare dustjacket is largely intact with the back flap detached but present - now protected under clear archival (mylar) cover. Chips and rough edges to jacket at folds and at spine top and bottom with a few small pieces missing. Scuffing and a small teardrop shaped mark on back. Original bright yellow is maintained on flaps. Sunning to spine , and dust jacket panels. Shallow diagonal cut at top of front flap which looks part of the original (price is at bottom of same flap). Textblock clean and unmarked with edges as issued. Former owner's name and address are written in pencil above a small address label (for same owner - presumably at later address) on the front free endpaper. A well preserved copy of this scarce volume with its even scarcer original dustjacket. Stoddard's warnings about what he saw as unwise U.S. investments in European bonds without, as he saw it, sufficient assurances that the Europeans would "play ball" and follow American economic models. Stoddard was known for his books on what he saw as the "dangers" posed by "colored" peoples to "white " civilization.Born in Brookline, Mass in 1883, Stoddard received his PhD in History from Harvard in 1914 and went on to write numerous books on current affairs and history. He died in 1950. Bookseller Inventory # 72372
