About this Item

First ed. Good condition, the spine has been professionally repaired and some lightened areas to the black cover boards. Former owner name on front endpaper. 1/2" tape repair to page 67, a small light stain at the bottom of page 71, occasional light finger soiling. Black cloth with lettering and small decorative device stamped in gold on spine and front cover. Decorative pictorial end pages in blue on gray paper. 18 color illustrations in black, white, blue and gold. Below each illustrations is a title surrounded by a decorative line drawing frame. In addition, there are 13 vignettes in black and white. John Austen was among a group of artist during the 1920s which included Aubrey Beardsley and Harry Clarke who were said to have a decadent style. Here we have Austen illustrating several plays with religious themes showing a definite nod to the Art Deco influences of the period. This provides a rather modern look, but the illustrations fit well with the type used and the overall design of the book. It may be noted that the title page declares the book to be "Decorated by John Austen" rather than illustrated by him. Bookseller Inventory # 17582D
