THE EXPEDITION AGAINST THE BENI-SNASSEN "HEAVY COLUMN TACTICS" (1859), 82 pages (Originally published in 1908) The Beni-Snassen had repeatedly raided the French occupied territories, throwing down the military glove. It was picked up and the French moved in heavy columns, or more accurately squares, with the infantry surrounding the baggage train, as they moved through the deserts so as to protect themselves from mounted raiders. This is the story of that campaign and the tactics the French employed.

About this title

Synopsis:

In the ongoing series of guerilla wars in its new African colony, France found its border with Morocco threatened by raids by the Beni-Snassen. This work is an account of French operations against the Beni-Snassen in their mountain fastness and in the surrounding plains. The work was written with an emphasis on the use of heavy, combined arms columns as the French advanced against a horse mounted enemy that could destroy ill-prepared infantry columns. However, if those columns were well organized and supported by cavalry and artillery, they proved very effective against the Muslim raiders. This is an account of the various battles and operations as well as the employment of the heavy, mixed arm column that the author advocated.
