FIRST EDITION. Large 8vo. [9]12-235[3]p. Illustrated with many b/w photos and drawings. Imitation leather red cloth decorated with black and gilt. Abbe Charles Benedict Nain [b. 1870], a Catholic priest and architact, was educated in Paris and Lyons. He was Curate of the Chinese Church in Singapore (1894-1896) and Procurator of the Roman Catholic Mission, Diocese of Malacca (1897-1914). Among other things he published a short biography of Pope Leo XIII. According to WHO'S WHO IN THE FAR EAST 1906-7, his address was Seremban, Negri Sembilan, Federated Malay States. EN EXTREME-ORIENT consists of early eyewitness accounts by a competent observer of several countries and cities in Southeast Asia. OCLC/World/Cat shows only three copies in the U.S. at Harvard, Columbia and the University of Washington. Very minor wear to extremities, very few spots to covers, minor dampstain on bottom rear cover (not affecting the interior), else very good, with archival copy of pp. 209 & 210 tipped in. [These pages were probably removed by a censor for the illustration on p. 209 is entitled "Le supplice de la cangue" and shows two persons in stocks.] No jacket. Bookseller Inventory # 04270
