About this Item

3 books bound in one volume: (1) John Cotton's, 1741, "An Earnest Exhortation.", 70 pages; (2) William William's, 1741, "A Discourse on Saving Faith", 50 pages; and (3) Nathanael Appleton's "Evangelical and Saving Repentance - In A Sermon - Preach'd at Newton, August 9, 1741. pages 1-44. The first book, by John Cotton has the title page but lacks pages 1-8. The wrinkled title page has a large tear that extends through the text, but is mostly complete. The second book, by William Williams, has the title page, but also lacks pages 1-8. The title page has a horizontal tear, but has all the text. The third book, by Nathanael Appleton, has the title page and pages 1-44. I don't how many pages (if any) should extend beyond page 44. The last 5 leaves of the third book have been sewn together with a single stitch thread. Attached is a card that explains the books' ownership. A number of blank pages "containing the name of Sarah Maxwell, who about 1764 married Alexander Park, who came with his parents from Ireland in 1728-29. Has names of their daughters, Mary Park born 1769, and Alice Park, born 1775. Donated by Sarah Maxwell Park's great-granddaughter, Miss Lorana(?) O. Armstrong, 1900". The pages are well bound, but are very browned and are brittle, with some light edge-chipping. Bound in period, full dark-brown leather, with the inner cover's top half of the wooden board lacking, together with the paper on the inner cover, which contained some lettering. The volume measures 3-3/8 inches by 5-5/8 inches. Bookseller Inventory # 13701
