About this Item

4pp. Folded as issued, old college library stamp to margin of title page [All Souls College Oxford]. British Parliamentary Paper [324]. The Queen's proclamation, read in India at Allahabad by Lord Canning, was prompted by the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58 and was the occasion on which the Crown assumed the powers previously exercised by the East India Company and as such marked one of the most important turning points in the history of India. The re-affirmation of the proclamation and the King-Emperor;s commitment to India and its people was read to a Durbar held at Jodhpur by the then Viceroy, Lord Minto. The new proclamation from King Edward marks 50 years of peace within the borders of India and looks forward ot increasingly representative institution. He refers to his Coronation Durbar in 1903 and his and his son's visits to india in 1876 and 1905. MAximum shipping charge £2 UK, £4.10 airmail.
