About this Item

This is the 1856 family bible of Ebenezer Whiteous and his wife Abby (?Abigail) Stuart Whiteous (born about 1812- died in 1876), with marriage, birth, and death records. The earlier bible records spell the family name as "Whiteous", a bit later as "Whiteouse", and finally as "Whitehouse". The frontpaper is inscribed - "Mrs. Abbagail Whiteouse - Portsmouth, New Hampshire". With the exception of 2 entries, all the entries have the dates. There are 10 marriage entries, 17 birth entries, and 11 death entries. Ebenezer and Abby Whiteous's children's births and birth dates are not recorded - Lydia, married first to William B. Robinson (died Jan. 1858), then married to Charles H. (B.?) in 1863,; Samuel N. Whiteous married to Mary Taylor in 1853; and Julia Whiteous married to Charles W. Shannon in 1860. The births include 4 Whiteouses between 1854 and 1860; 5 Shannons between 1860 and 1869; 2 generations of 5 Robinsons - 1856, 1882-1883, and 1892-1894. Some other related family names are Butterfield, Humphry, and Randal. This bible is in poor condition and needs rebinding. Bound in full, worn calf, with no back cover, and the front cover detached. The spine is very worn and chipped. The last page's blank corner has a large piece missing. From other sources I find that Samuel N. Whitehouse was a carpenter in the navy during the Civil War, and then at the Portsmouth (N.H.) navy yard. His son Samuel S. (Stewart) Whitehouse (spelled Stuart in the bible), born in 1858 at Portsmouth, N.H. was a prominent lawyer in Brooklyn, New York during the 1880's and the 1890's. In 1879 he married a daughter of John B. Hoover of the U.S Navy and had at least 2 daughters. Bookseller Inventory # 12501
