About this title

Synopsis:

An up-to-the-minute reference resource offers special insights into the environmental crisis that our world faces, featuring more than 350 entries explaining, in clear language, the interdependence of life forms and suggesting actions to save the future.

From Booklist:

Gr. 6-10. This "encyclopedia" will be a useful resource for school and public libraries and for science teachers who have classroom ready-reference collections. Fleisher defines words and phrases related to ecology and to humankind's interaction with the environment, including entries on places where significant ecological damage (Love Canal, Times Beach, etc.) has occurred. His explanations are clear, with most entries two to three paragraphs long, and he also provides a list of environmental organizations and an extensive bibliography. The work is fairly wide-ranging, but some topics have been omitted or not covered fully enough. Fleisher explains the Endangered Species Act, for example, but doesn't mention that it expired in 1993 and that although it is still being enforced, it is the subject of continued debate; he briefly defines synfuels, but ethanol, a major synfuel and the subject of political debate, is not mentioned. More "see" references would have been helpful. Chris Sherman
