Item description from seller

Second edition of this scarce book, enlarged from the first of 1895. The popular illustrated weekly Black and White noted that it "ought to be inspected by all who think of providing themselves with houses of their own. the results are delightful". Just three copies traced at institutional libraries: British Library, Historic England, and the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Goldsmith, born in Manchester in 1856, was articled to his father, George Hartley Goldsmith, in 1872, going into partnership with him a decade later. Most of the houses depicted are in the North West, largely Lancashire and Cheshire. The final 38 pages comprise decorative advertisements for everything from artistic door furniture to the Accrington Brick & Tile Co., and manufacturers of sanitary ware, wallpapers, grates, stained glass, cooking ranges, and bathrooms. Black and White, 29 February 1896. Landscape quarto. With half-tone illustrations from photographs and line drawn plans throughout. Original grey cloth, bevelled boards, gilt lettered front cover, yellow foliate pattern endpapers. Spine sunned, binding a little rubbed, red smudge to front cover, scattered foxing but remains just about a very good copy.…
