About this title

Synopsis:

The two volumes of this set contain reprinted articles and excerpts that provide a comprehensive overview of critical economic writings on poverty. The readings range in date from A.C. Pigou's 1912 article, "Economic welfare and the national dividend" to Peter Vallentyne's "Equality, efficiency, and the priority of the worse-off" from 2000. The 71 articles are divided into 17 main subject categories, including welfare basis of distributional analysis, welfare and inequality rankings, inequality measurement, the welfare approach to inequality, functional forms of income and distribution, and statistical issues. Cowell (economics, London School of Economics and Political Science, UK) provides a lengthy and technical introduction to each of the 17 subjects in his introduction. Both volumes contain a name index, but no subject index. Annotation (c) Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
