xxiv, 348 pages, plate with large engraved folding map of Southern France. With list of subscribers. Full leather binding. The Bookplate of William CORNWALLIS is on the front pastedown. Folding map in great condition, with one small closed tear. Jean Cavalier (1681-1740), became the leader of the Camisards in the revolt in the Cevennes, in 1702. He also concluded the armistice with Villars, the French commander. After an eventful life as a leader of a troup of mercenaries he finally settled in England. To escape "pecuniary embarrassments", he published his Memoirs, first in Dublin, in 1726, and one year later in this London edition. "It is written with animation, and is full of military detail. some of its most startling stories seem to be confirmed by the testimony of contemporary hostile witnesses. the Memoirs breathe a strongly Protestant spirit." (DNB). Cavalier's work survived in European literature. He is the idealized hero in Ludwig Tieck's novel 'The Revolt in the Cevennes', and in Eugene Sue's 'The Protestant Leader.'
