Synopsis: How did a collection of neighbourhood volunteer organizations come to influence the development of a major Canadian city? Few other North American cities have embraced the community league movement with the vigour of Edmonton. For 87 years, tens of thousands of volunteers from the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL) have often acted as a counterweight to large private and institutional interests, shaping municipal development by providing a voice and a training ground for grassroots civic participation. In its wake, the EFCL has left a host of sports, cultural, and civic initiatives for the improvement of Edmonton, and an important lesson on how to create community.

From the Back Cover: No other major city in North America owes as much to its community league movement as Edmonton, Alberta. For close to a century, tens of thousands of volunteers from the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL) have shaped municipal development by giving a voice to and acting as a training ground for grassroots civic participation. EFCL contributions have touched all facets of life in Edmonton, from transportation and development to education, health, and recreation. On occasion the leagues have acted as counterweights to large private and institutional interests. In its path, the EFCL has left a living legacy of sports, cultural, and civic initiatives for the improvement of Edmonton, and has also provided an important lesson on how to create vibrant communities within a large urban setting. In this definitive history of the EFCL, author Ron Kuban explores how a collection of neighbourhood volunteer organizations came together to exercise such a profound influence on Edmonton's civic development. His account, reflecting on the contributions of thousands of individuals, illustrates what can be achieved by volunteers who embody the local values of grassroots democracy. Edmonton's Urban Villages chronicles the history of a great city seen through the influence of its community leagues and their federation. Like small villages within a large cosmopolitan city, Edmonton's community leagues continue to make an indelible contribution to the greater good. This is their inspiring story. Ron Kuban has over twenty years of volunteer experience with Edmonton's community league movement, serving in many capacities including the presidency of the EFCL. He has a PhD from the University of Alberta and was awarded the Queen's Jubilee medal in 2003 for his community service.
