About this Item

London: Hodder & Stoughton, no date [1916]. Quarto, original white publisher's cloth elaborately stamped in gold and blue after a design by Edmund Dulac. [2],* [10], 170. Illustrated with 15 beautiful tipped-in color plates by Dulac. Limited to 350 copies signed by Dulac. Signed limitation leaf in this copy has been excised, perhaps to send to Dulac, who has adorned the reverse side with a beautiful original painting of "The Princess of the Pagodas," signed in ink by Dulac and dated 1920 beneath the image. The cover is in very good to fine condition, and internal contents are very fine but for some light tape residue on blank endleaf front and back. The original gouache painting is set within a disc of gold leaf (3-1/2 inches across) which is lightly abraded (see photograph). A unique copy of one of Dulac's most famous books. Dulac (1882-1953) is considered (with Arthur Rackham, Kay Nielson, and Charles and Heath Robinson) one of the five major "Golden Age" gift-book illustrators. He studied law for two years while attending classes at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. After winning a prize for his painting he decided to devote himself to art full-time. He twice won the Grand Prix (1901 and 1903) for his paintings, and by 1904 he was off to London for the start of his meteoric career as a book illustrator. His arrival there corresponded with the development of new color printing technology which he was the first to take full advantage of. Bookseller Inventory # 10936
