About this Item

First Edition, First Printing of this novel sold as non-fiction. Cover boards are clean with gilt title to spine, with little noticeable wear. Interior is clean and unmarked. Binding is square and solid. Dust jacket is clean, with slight age toning, but no tears or stains, price intact on flap, in mylar sleeve. At first, this novel was believed to be the author's autobiography, the story of an orphan raised by his Cherokee Indian grandparents. He fooled his publisher and readers into believing that he was part Cherokee and a cowboy drifter. But this was all a charade since Carter was really living a double life and had been an avid segregationist, member of the KKK, and a speech writer for then Alabama Governor George Wallace. Texas Monthly published a story revealing the hoax in 1992, "The Real Education of Little Tree," in which they uncovered the author's real name - Asa Earl Carter and detailed the facts behind his fake memoir ¿ a splendid work of fiction, much stranger than the truth. When first published, the book captured the attention of a wide audience and was adopted as required reading in many schools throughout the country. In 1988, this book was selected by independent booksellers as the one title they most enjoyed selling. It soon became a word-of-mouth bestseller in a paperback released by the University of New Mexico Press. Carter also wrote the novel The Outlaw Josey Wales. Bookseller Inventory # 004159
