This biography by a Macalaster college historian and political science professor details the life and career of prominent educator who became pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, served in the army as a hospital chaplain during the Civil War and worked for President Lincoln and President Johnson. In 1893 when he died he was eulogized as "the pride of his fellow citizens who regarded him as the incarnation of all that was excellent and noble of the early days and a fitting exemplar of these times when his well-beloved state put off the rude garments of frontier life and clothed herself in the graceful apparel of a more prosperous era."
