Exquisite, high quality book with slip cover box in red faux leather, flat but sculpted white glazed porcelain horse SCULPTURE with "Boehm" in gold glued to the cover, box is accommodating the mini sculpture with an oval cut-out. Title in gold. 12" x 9". 264 pgs, 40 color plates (of Limited Editions from 1961) + many B/W & some color photos, endpaper & other sketches throughout book are 'doodles' by Boehm, complete listing of Hard-paste Porcelain Collection, hallmarks, bibliography, forward by Bishop John J. Dougherty, "The Ceramist" by John E. Hartill & 'The Artist" by Judge J. Lindsay Almond, Jr. ", all edges are gilt, verso of covers is original marbled paper, endpapers illustrated with drawn wildlife in red on cream, many full color illustrations of Boehm's one-of-a-kind porcelain sculptures of animals, mainly of birds of America and exotic and flowers, that were given and received as gifts to and from head of states - Pres. Eisenhower to Queen Elisabeth, Nixon to Pope John, Lyndon Johnson, etc. accompanied with photographs and facsimiles of letters. This famous American (New Jersey) ceramic artist grew up in an orphanage and was self taught in this ancient art. The Vatican named one of its galleries after Boehm. Died of a heart attack at age 56, this book is to commemorate him. 3500 edition, this copy is SIGNED by Helen Boehm, his widow and partner. The book has some sun fading on spine and cover, the slip case has some shelf wear. Tight and clean with no markings other then by the artists wife, Mrs. Edward Marshall Boehm.
