120 color plates include: Alexandria, the Giza Ferry at Cairo, the Great Mosque at Siout, the temple of Dendera, the Temple of Luxor, Aswan, the temple of Wadi Dabod, the Temple of Dandour, the great temple of Abu Simbel, the temples of Karnak, the obelisk of Ramses II at Luxor, the colossi of Memnon, and the pyramids of Giza Seen from the Nile. This is the sequel to "The Holy Land: Yesterday and Today", and contains the original plates of the first edition that show the temples of Egypt and the mosques of Cairo. These lithographs are arranged in chronological order and accompanied by extracts and comments from Robert's travel journal; current photographs show many of these sites as they appear today. Folio, 272 pp, b&w and color illus throughout. Golden yellow cloth covers with gilt illustration at front cover and spine. Color pictorial dj with title in black and red at front cover and in black and red at white spine. Dj is only slightly ruffled at top edges, o/w very good. David Roberts (1796-1864) was one of the most acclaimed landscape painters of his time. He made an extended trip to Egypt and the Holy Land in 1838-39, during which he made the series of drawings that brought him lasting fame.
