Circa 1840-1850. Original chapbook, once bound, with an illustration of a ship on the front. No. 36 under the publisher information on front. One sheet of paper folded to make 8 pages, unopened. 3 3/4 x 6 inches. Chapbooks were an early form of popular literature, originating in the 16th century and fading out of use by the mid-19th century. They were cheaply printed booklets that "chapmen" would sell door to door or at fairs to the common people. This one contains lyrics to eight popular songs of the day. Bookseller Inventory # 016283
