Publisher's original cloth binding, moderate foxing, some rubbing on corners and spine. Previous owner's signature on both volumes, "E. D. Robinson"? Vol. 1 - 251 pages, 4 drawings by author complete. Vol. 2 - 247 pages with 4 drawing by author, complete, with appendix and several pages of advertisements for publisher, some pages uncut. No. 73 in the Zamorano Eighty, 1945, "This work by an eminent writer and artist is probably the outstanding book on the early gold rush in California". Bayard Taylor (1825-1878) was a successful translator and travel writer. He traveled to California at the height of the Gold Rush as a correspondent for the New York Tribune.
