With Illustrations by the Author. N.Y.: George P. Putnam, 1850. 2nd edition. With 8 chromolithographs. xii, 251; 247pp. plus advts. Orig. cloth. Spines a bit faded, else a remarkably fine set. Howes T-43. Zamorano 80, 73. The titlepage states that this is the "Second Edition," but it was issued in the same year and is identical to the first edition. "The outstanding book on the early gold rush in California. The author's description of the Constitutional Convention at Monterey is the best we have, as are the views he gives us of the early mining camps. The colored plates are beautifully tinted works of art depicting San Francisco, Monterey, Sacramento, and mining camps. Bayard Taylor saw everything and recorded all he saw." Zamerano 80. The illustrations were done by Taylor himself. Bookseller Inventory # 35744
