About this Item

40pp, printed in double columns, salvaged from a damaged copy of the congressional debates. Speeches on the 1824 Presidential Election during which no candidate received a majority of electoral votes. With support from Henry Clay of Kentucky, John Quincy Adams was elected by the House of Representatives over Andrew Jackson, who had the majority of the popular vote. John C. Calhoun was elected Vice President. Pages are not all consecutive, as the issue was addressed, dropped, picked up again, as per Congressional practice. Most but not all speeches are complete. Important piece on the political history of America, and includes long speeches by Representatives George McDuffie of South Carolina, James Buchanan, who at the time was a Representative from Pennsylvania, John Strode Barber of Virginia, Daniel Webster of Massachusetts. Also includes the Speaker of the House's formal announcement that Adams had been elected and should take office on March 4, 1825. In plastic report covers with black spine sleeve. Very scarce.
