About this Item

Publisher's cloth, slightly worn; interior excellent. Bookplate of the Royal Military College of Canada. First edition, the foundation for the theory of wireless telegraphy. As winner of the Adams Prize, Cambridge University stated that the work is an "improvement of existing knowledge in respect of . . . the modes and periods of free electric vibrations in systems of charged bodies, and the radiation from them." The work contains the solution of the problem of diffraction at the edge of a perfectly conducting prism.About the time this essay was published, Marconi succeeded in sending wireless signals across the Atlantic. The issue for physicists and mathematicians was whether the curvature of the earth had an effect on the wireless waves. Macdonald was the first to formulate the problem as one of diffraction.Macdonald (1865-1935) was a Scottish mathematician. A member of the Royal Society, he was awarded a Royal Medal in 1916, and for three years served as president of the London Mathematical Society. Bookseller Inventory # 15412
