Mispaginations to preliminary leaves In Volume 1 per usual. Contemporary calf, Volume 1 rebacked and with loss to front lower corner, Volume 2 has tender joints and minor loss to lower spine; new endpapers in Volume 1, both copies contain scattered foxing and damp stains, especially to gutters of the first quire of Volume 1. With the signature of Edmund Bainbridge in Volume 2, p. 101, and the bookplate of Arnold Thackray over that of the Essex Institute on both paste-downs. First edition in English of the author's first major work, based on seventy lectures given in his laboratory. The book contains valuable descriptions of the elements and their properties, chemical affinities, mineral waters, and organic chemistry. Fourcroy (1755-1809), noted French chemist and professor at the École de Médicine, was a friend and collaborator of Lavoisier. He joined with Lavoisier, Guyton de Morveau, and Berthollet in revising chemical nomenclature, and undertook the enormous task of completing the chemical section of the Encyclopédie Méthodique.
