About this Item

the book begins with a sixteen page section devoted to promotion thru recommendations followed by an extended description and explanation of the system. however, the first point of note is the copy of elford's large trade card laid down on the front pastedown which provides considerable information about j. m. elford his background and his business.first, j. m. elford operated shop at 119 east bay street, charleston, s. c. selling sextants, quadrants, spy glasses etc. and repaired same. it also describes him as a mathematician. above the trade card is a note in ink and initialled which states "to be kept with the models of telegraphs". this in part explains the excellent condition of the book since was the store copy. the next thing is the hand coloured illustration of the marine telegraph flags.the original glassine separating illustratration from title remains in place in very good condition. the next important page holds the dedication of the book to the chamber of commerce in charleston, s. c. the next page contains recommendations from important people in the area. the most interesting being j. r. poinsett, representative to congress from the charleston district. below that another recommendation in the form of a resolution of the charleston marine society signed by various worthies including benjamin mathews, commander of the U. S. R. C. Gallatin, and more. then there is a recommendation from some thirty ships masters stating they will use the system on their ships.this is an early signal book with a thoughtful design that clearly impressed many and certainly shows that elford was a person of worth in charleston at that time to have garnered so much interest and support several illustrations to come. an unusually fine example of this early american signal plan and book.
