About this Item

[bound with] Roth, Gottfried Christian. Gottfr. Christ. Rothii De imagunculis Germanorum magicis, quas alrunas vocant, commentatio historico-antiquaria, feminarum apud germanos veteres sacrarum institutia et cultum religiosum simul explicans. Helmstadii: Apud C.F. Weygandum, 1737. 8vo. 74 pp. In the first work, Schedius (1615-41) studies the religion of the ancient Germanic, Gallic, and British peoples and that of the Vandals. There is much mythology, including that of the Norse. The work carries notes and illustrative observations by Joannes Jarkius and a preface by Johannes Albertus Fabricius. The work ends with the "Dissertatio de cultu solis, Freji et Othini, V. C. Jo. Georg. Keysleri . Halae, apud E. G. Crugium, 1728," with its own sectional title-page (pp. [759-89]). Roth's treatise covers Germanic mythology too, but also medicine, magic, mysticism, and spagiric. 8vo. [30], 771 (i.e. 789), [35] pp., 8 plts. Contemporary half vellum with floral-pattern daubed paper sides; spine vellum heavily soiled and peeling. Some gatherings loosening from first work. Ex-library with call number on spine, bookplate on front pastedown, library name stamped on lower edges of pages of closed book; but no other markings. Bookseller Inventory # 13375
