About this Item

12mo. 268p. After the success of the 1874 edition which had 218 pages, the size expanded and now has full page ads in the back for Steinway Pianos as well as the more prestigious carriage companies in an era before the automobile. At a price of $6.00, this could only be afforded by the very well off and was essential for the wealthy to know exactly where their friends (and potential rivals lived). Whether it is John Jacob Astor, whose wife dictated who would be admitted to the "400" (the Vanderbilt's were excluded since they were represented by the nouveau riche). Their magnificent mansion built at 660 Fifth Avenue (still a vacant space according to this directory) became a magnet of so many rich and famous that eventually Mrs. Astor was forced to accept them into their elite society. These books were kept by the great families and were indispensable for the social elite. One of the essential guides for a study of New York Upper Classes in the 1870's. (Later editions such as the 1877 showed more of the middle classes and by the last edition in 1891 virtually anyone with the smallest piece of property was included). Original cloth binding with all edges gilt, gilt stamping on cover and spine "Elite Directory". A very good copy with light edge wear. Bookseller Inventory # 018703
