About this Item

"Elmer Gantry" is one of Lewis¿s most acclaimed novels, acquiring renewed relevance in the early 21st Century because of its depiction of sex, corruption, religion and hypocrisy in the evangelical movement. Second issue, with ¿Gantry¿ on book spine (corrected from ¿Cantry¿). In 1926, ¿Sinclair Lewis came to Kansas City to research a novel about preachers¿ Each Wednesday at his hotel, Lewis held wide-ranging bull sessions with a group of [local] ministers. He challenged their theologies and heard, in confidence, their ¿war stories.¿ Lewis spent the following summer, at a Minnesota lake, writing Elmer Gantry¿ (Unitarian Universalist Historical Society). Praised by H.L. Mencken, the controversial novel ¿was an instant bestseller¿ Sales were further stimulated when Boston banned it and the evangelist Billy Sunday dubbed Lewis ¿Satan¿s Cohort¿ A satire of American religious life, Elmer Gantry may be seen as a cautionary tale for ¿born again¿ America¿ (Parker, 121-22). Pastore 13. Bruccoli & Clark III:214.Made into a powerful and popular film with Burt Lancaster as Elmer Gantry in the 1960s. Harcourt, Brace, and Company, New York, 1927. Hardcover. Very Good plus. No DJ. 1st Edition, 1st state binding, with the "G" in Gantry resembling a C. (NB: The second state is identical to the first, except that the "C" has been corrected to a "G."). Original deep blue boards with an orange box around cut-out lettering both on the cover and on the spine. The boards are in very good condition with the orange accents still bright and blue lettering clear and crisp; slight fading on the spine but all letters are visible including the "C" for "G." There is some minor rubbing on the spine ends and on the corners. Light browning on front and back endpapers, but the pages are clear of any marks, tears or stains. An unusually clean and collectable copy. 432 pp. NB -- Two nearly identical copies available, both VG+. One has the bookplate of the original owner neatly pasted on front endpaper.
