About this Item

Small 8vo: x,7-277,[1]; [2],iv,5-154,[10]pp, with three frontispieces (one to each book) and 140 further full-page copper-engraved plates. Contemporary mottled calf, smooth spine richly gilt in six compartments, red morocco lettering piece gilt. An excellent copy of this charming work, rebacked with original spine expertly re-laid, very lightly thumbed, occasional scattered spotting, else clean and bright with good impressions of the plates. Second Lansdown and Mills Bristol edition, following the first of 1806. Quarles's friend Edward Benlowes brought home from the grand tour two Jesuit models for Emblems: Pia desideria (1624), by Herman Hugo, and Typus mundi (1627), compiled at the Antwerp Jesuit college. "Quarles uses the forty-five emblems from Pia desideria in the original order, though he draws selectively from Typus mundi. . . . His poems are largely independent and new. They exploit the mimetic quality of the pictures and transform them into allegories of spiritual truth." The first edition of Emblemes appeared in 1634 (though the title page is dated 1635). Four years later Quarles produced what he called "a second service" of the same dish, Hieroglyphikes of the Life of Man, a shorter book of fifteen emblems, the "most notable English version of the theme of the ages of man. In 1639 the two works were reprinted and issued in one volume as Emblemes and Hieroglyphikes, and it is in this form that they have commonly appeared since. There are about sixty editions or issues, more than thirty of them after 1800. Christopher Harvey's School of the Heart was mistakenly attributed to Quarles and, from the late eighteenth century onward, from time to time included in editions of Emblemes and Hieroglyphikes," as here.
