About this Item

London, A. Bettesworth, 1723. 16mo - 16.5 cm. [6], pp. 374, 2 engraved frontis pieces and 93 full-page engraved emblems in the text by P. Holmes, Van Hove and others. Full contemporary leather with four raised bands on spine with gilt title lettering on black. Re-cased with marbled end leaves probably at time of contemporary binding. A Rare edition of Quarles Emblems was first published in 1635. There have been at least 44 following editions. Francis Quarles was a religious poet. Each Emblem presented consists of an allegorical illustration (many of them very quaint), a poem on some passage of the Old or New Testament, and extract from of "the fathers" and an epigram. Emblem 12, Book 3rd, is regarded as one of the finest poems, and some assert that it alone is enough to give Quarles rank among the best religious poets. Bookseller Inventory # X1010LW
