About this Item

First edition in Fine condition without dust jacket, as issued, quarter cloth and paper covered boards. One of 203 unnumbered copies, signed by the author. An unusual and important volume, (although Updike often had his poems and lectures published by small presses, thereby attesting both to his popularity as an author and making matters difficult for completist collectors. From the author's note in "Emersonianism": The text was from a talk given at the Davis camus of the Unversity of California on October 25, 1983, and .somewhat revised at the 1644th stated meeting of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, in Cambridge, Massachusetts on November 9, 1983. Again revised, it appeared in The New Yorker of June 4, 1984. This present version reverts to the form of a spoken address. The quotations from Emerson follow, in their sometimes curious-seeming spelling and punctuation, the text as last proofread by the author himself.A number of correspondents have enriched my understanding and refined some of my allegations; I perhaps underestimated the number and passion of living Emersonians.".
