8vo. pp. xxiv, 490. 22 plates (incl. photogravure frontis. portrait), title vignette, & 24 text illus. lacking the folding partly coloured map & folding facsimile. contemporary full chagrin, gilt edges, rebacked with spine mounted (rubbed). First American Edition. Jephson was one of Stanley’s officers on the expedition for the relief of Emin Pasha in 1888-89 in the Equatorial Province of Africa. He was engaged for nine months with Emin in resisting the rebellion of the inhabitants who refused to evacuate, and was imprisoned with Emin at Dufile in August 1888. Both Emin and Jephson were condemned to death by the council of native rebel officers, but in February 1889 Jephson succeeded in rejoining Stanley, and subsequently they managed to rescue Emin.
