About this title
A sequel to "Encyclopedia of the Third World", this reference work offers a range of social, political and economic information on industrial countries. Other topics discussed are geography, population, climate, defence, religions, currency, history, human rights, education and transport. From Library Journal:
The editor of this reference defines First World countries as "advanced, developed, industrial, or post industrial," and non-Communist. These include Western Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. The next reference in the series will be the Encyclopedia of the Second World , covering Communist countries. Both use the same format as the author's well-known Encyclopedia of the Third World (LJ 4/1/82; the 4th edition is scheduled for December 1990). The text of First World is identical word for word, including statistics for 1986 or 1987, to the publisher's new National Profiles series ( Benelux reviewed in LJ 8/89), whose volumes are $35 each. As mentioned in that review, the narrative and statistical information is more comprehensive and detailed than competitors Countries of the World and Their Leaders Yearbook 1990 (Gale, 1990), Europa Yearbook 1990 (Europa, 1990), Western Europe 1989 ( LJ 4/15/89), or Worldmark Encyclopedia of the Nations (Worldmark, 1988. 7th ed.), but Europa has better directory information. Also, there is no indication that this will be updated annually, as are Europa and Countries. This reference is definitely more economical than purchasing all of the National Profiles individually. Together with the companion sets to the Second and Third Worlds, this reference series is not more economical than Europa , but its more comprehensive subject coverage makes it a strong competitor and a good alternative choice for medium to large libraries.
